Ear surgery, sometimes known as otoplasty, is a surgical procedure that can set prominent ears back closer to the head or reduce the size of larger ears for a more natural appearance. Ear surgery is most often performed on children between the ages of 4 and 14 years. However, ear surgery on adults is also possible. Most ear surgery patients will have their treatment performed under general anesthesia. During the procedure, an incision is made in the back of the ear in order to sculpt or fold cartilage, thereby allowing the ear to lie flatter against the head. Stitches are then used to close the incision and help to maintain the new shape. Ear surgery (otoplasty) does not alter the patient's hearing.
