Wound Treatments
Problem:
- Congenital deformity
- Developmental deformity
- Acquired deformity from accidents or trauma : burn wounds, lacerations, growths and aging problems
Solution:
Reconstructive surgery can take on many forms and a myriad of different
procedures. Although no amount of surgery can achieve “perfection”,
maximum attention is given to the aesthetic result and to improve form and
function.
Procedure Options:
- Direct Closure
Direct closure is performed on skin-surface wounds that have straight edges
requiring a simple cut. Extra care is made to minimize noticeable stitch marks
and scarring.
- Skin Grafts
A patch of healthy skin that is taken from one area of the body to cover
an area where skin is missing or damaged is called a skin graft. There are
different types of skin grafts used depending on the location, depth and
severity of the wound. This procedure is largely used to treat burns.
- Tissue Expansion:
By stretching adjacent tissue with a balloon-like device called an expander
the body is able to “grow” extra skin. The expander may create an
unsightly bulge temporarily, but offers a near-perfect match of skin color,
sensation and texture. This procedure is used most commonly for breast
reconstruction following breast removal, but also used to repair skin damaged
by birth defects, accidents or surgery and in some cosmetic surgeries.
- Flap Surgery / Microsurgery
Flap surgery and microsurgery have made tremendous advances in helping severely
injured or disfigured patients. These procedures can replant amputated fingers
and limbs, or transplant large sections of tissue, fat, skin, muscle or bone.
A flap is a section of living tissue that carries its own blood supply and is
moved from one area of the body to another thereby restoring form and function
to affected areas of the body. These procedures can take many forms that will
be dictated by the individual needs and circumstances of the patient.
